How serious is the current Covid-19 wave in India?

Let’s understand how serious the current Covid-19 wave in India and how serious it can be in coming days.
Around 700+ new covid cases are reported in India in last 24 hours, the covid cases are increasing day by day in India across the states. The most number of active cases are reported in Kerala. The JN.1 sub variant has 145 cases among these.This can be a new covid wave in India as cases may surge as due to new year parties and gathering and on going winter season people may have cold and cough so with low immunity chances of getting infected may be high.

5 Deaths are reported across the country during this time frame of 24 hours.

JN.1 sub variant is reportedly spread across country in 9 state at present.

These 9 states are Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Delhi Telangana and Gujarat.

Although the symptoms of the JN.1 sub variant is not that much severe but still there are hospitalization reported in case of some the patients.

Expert in the medical background are stating that the JN.1 sub variant is having a significant mutations. 

JN.1 sub variant first case was detected in India on 9th December in Kerala.

WHO has classified the JN.1 sub variant of interest.

WHO generally categorizes the variants in 3 basic categories and these are primarily variant under monitoring, Variant of interest and variant of concern. Generally the viruses change over the period of the time and the types of the virus are known as variants.

Kerala : 78 

Gujarath : 34

Goa : 18

Karnataka : 8

Maharashtra : 7

Rajasthan : 5

Tamil Nadu : 4

Telangana : 2

Delhi : 1 

Gujarat health minister Rushikesh on Thursday said that the situation in Gujarat alarming as most of the patient are getting recovered home isolation. Patel also said that in Gujarat there are currently 64 active cases where in Ahmedabad have the highest number of 47 cases

Is Government ready to handle situation?

Governments across the states are already taking various steps such as hospitals Covid’ preparations.

Arrangements of RT-PCR tests, oxygen availability which was a major lesson learnt in the last COVID wave.

Delhi Health minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has said that “We have increased the number of tests. Yesterday, we performed 636 tests in private and government hospitals combined. Three genome sequencing results were received yesterday, out of which two were old Omicron variants and one was JN.1,” 

How serious is the current Covid-19 wave in India?

As this variant is categorized as variant of interest and variant of concern right now the situation is not that much serious. Although people should take all the necessary precautions.

As per the virologist this variant will not have any serious illness.

JN.1 already have a spread in 40-50 countries across the world. It is significantly faster spreading sub variants though. It is a mild variant. Elderly people or people already having malignancies and comorbidities should be careful.

What precautions needed to protect from Covid-19?

Same precautions we have to follow during this phases as well, such as using mask in public places, washing hands regularly. In case of any symptoms then visit to hospital. Ensure that you test yourself if any symtoms. Avoid travelling to crowded places.
